TRUTH VALUES: One Girl’s Romp Through M.I.T.’S Male Math Maze
Are Women Inferior to Men in Math and Science? NYC writer/performer and “recovering mathematician” Gioia De Cari offers a woman’s perspective on this question, as she shares her experiences in higher mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the autobiographical solo show, TRUTH VALUES: One Girl’s Romp Through M.I.T.’S Male Math Maze http://www.unexpectedtheatre.org/ , directed by Miriam Eusebio. While making the most of the comic absurdity of being the only woman in a spooky basement office, being asked to serve cookies at a seminar and retaliating with “fashion experiments,” TRUTH VALUES is also a serious exploration of the world of elite mathematics and the role of women in math and science. The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) is pleased to present a special engagement of this play during the 2013 Joint Mathematics Meetings. From Jan 9 to Jan 12 at 79 Horton Plaza San Diego, SD 92101 $38.50 More info: Toni Robin

The National Science Foundation has awarded the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership $2.6 million for phase 2 of the Art of Science Learning Initiative, a project entitled "Integrating Informal STEM and Arts-Based Learning to Foster Innovation." San Diego is one of three national sites involved in this project. San Diego Innovation Alliance members are invited to join a special informational meeting with Harvey Seifter, Art of Science Learning founder and the project’s director and principal investigator. We have received a number of inquiries about the project, and this a great opportunity to ask questions and learn more now that it is beginning.
Over the next four years, this grant will fund arts-based incubators for innovation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) learning in San Diego, Chicago and Worcester, Mass, as well as the development of a new arts-based STEM curriculum; experimental research to measure the impact of arts-based learning on creativity, collaboration and innovation; and public programs using the project’s activities to advance civic engagement with STEM. International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge
About the Challenge
Some of science's most powerful statements are not made in words. From DaVinci's Vitruvian Man to Rosalind Franklin's X-rays, science visualization has a long and literally illustrious history. To illustrate is to enlighten! Illustrations provide the most immediate and influential connection between scientists and other citizens, and the best hope for nurturing popular interest. They are a necessity for public understanding of research developments.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the journal Science created the International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge to celebrate the grand tradition of science visualization and to encourage its continued growth. The spirit of the competition is to communicate science, engineering and technology for education and journalistic purposes. This year's competition opened June 1.
Judges appointed by NSF and Science will select winners in five categories: Photography, Illustration, Posters & Graphics, Games & Apps, and Video. The winning entries will appear in a special section of Science (with one entry chosen for the front cover) and be hosted at ScienceMag.org and NSF.gov. In addition, each winner will receive a one-year online subscription to Science and a certificate of appreciation. If you are interested in participating, please familiarize yourself with the Guidelines and submit your entry using the online entry form. If you have questions, please contact us at [email protected].
ENTRY DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 28, 2012

Medical education in recent decades has increasingly emphasized the need for physicians in training to develop competence in the "soft" skills of communication, empathy, and understanding – skills traditionally associated with studying literature, philosophy, history and the arts. But have changes in contemporary medicine – the decline in primary care, the ubiquity of high-tech "non-touch" instruments, computer-based electronic charting, and discontinuity between inpatient and outpatient care made the ideal of humanistic medicine beside the point?Complete Details: www.bronowskiforum.org

Augmented Reality: Is It Real?
Augmented Reality (AR) is a new technology that's promising to change the way we interact with the world. The technology combines elements from the physical and the virtual world to create new experiences at home, in business, on the go, and in between. While we've heard about the exciting applications to come, few have materialized. But at this CommNexus consumer electronics SIG event, two companies actively involved in AR, Qualcomm and Wowwee, will show us the new products they are creating, talk about what's really coming, and discuss the challenges the technology faces. You'll have a chance to ask questions and learn much more. Join us for this exciting introduction to Augmented Reality. It may change the you think about the virtual world and the real world.

2012 BioEASI K-12 Science Art Challenge
Have you heard of putting the "A" (for art) in STEM to get STEAM? Do you think science and art share a requirement for creativity and innovation?
Inspire your students to discover new ways to look at science and the world by encouraging them to make a piece for BioEASI's 2012 "Science Art Challenge”. Students can express what they know about science in a creative way, and possibly even win a prize! This is a great opportunity for your students to show off their creativity and think about how science and art are interconnected.
All art must be sent electronically to [email protected] by May 11, 2012* to allow ample time for judging and preparation.
*We've recently learned that the original deadline for submitting artwork to our K-12 Science Art Challenge conflicts with STAR testing. To accommodate students taking this test, we are extending the deadline for submission until May 11th, 2012.
More information and specific requirements click here: http://www.bioeasi.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=159

CALL FOR ENTRIES for creative projects!
CALL FOR VOTERS!
URBANIST and 3rdSpace are excited to present our 2nd Pizza Parlay, co-produced by wishproject.me, and sponsored and hosted by URBN Coal Fired Pizza & Bar.
Pizza Parlay is a fun, new monthly pizza party to raise micro-grants for creative projects by San Diegans. Anyone can submit a proposal for a creative project that needs a little funding. We will select a number of submissions and then, at a pizza party open to the public, Parlay attendees vote on their favorites. The winning project will be announced on Urbanistguide.com and granted the funds from the cover charge + a free 3-month membership to 3rdSpace, co-working and club for the creative. (Second and third place winners will each receive a free 1-month membership to 3rdSpace.) The grant is made up of $10 from each $12 cover, so the more attendees, the bigger the grant!
URBN Coal Fired Pizza & Bar is hosting Pizza Parlay #2, opening its warehouse-like North Park space to Parlay-goers and feeding them some of the best pizza in San Diego! Drinks will be available for purchase.
To submit your proposal:
Entries are due for review on Monday, April 23rd.
